((This is some old work, I did it three to four years ago. I hope you enjoy!))
Day: March 10
Time: 13:45
Weather: Still Cloudy
Condition: Stable
The roof is finally fixed, and we have found fresh water at last. Marian still cries at night from hunger pains. We have rationed all the food that we collected but it’s still not enough. During the day, while her mother and I hunt for supplies, she stays at the shelter and plays with the rag doll that we found last week. It’s strange to see her doing something so normal when our lives have been turned so lopsided. I wish to find a bicycle for her, like I had when I was her age. But so far the search has been fruitless.
Her mother thinks that I am a fool to be putting my hopes up to find any form of transportation. All of the refugees would have taken them when they passed through. Any transportation vehicles left would most defiantly not work, making them useless to us.
If I had been smart I would have gone with the refugees when they offered. But, silly me, I insisted that it was my duty to stay with April and Marian. In truth I don’t think that April likes me. I see her giving me dark looks out of the corner of my eye, like she holds me personally responsible for our troubles. I try to ignore it and put on a happy face for Marian. But it’s hard to do when she is constantly asking me where her friends have gone.
How can I tell her that they left with the other refugees, and those that stayed behind are now dead? How can I explain that to a five year old?

Day: March 12
Time: 08:16
Weather: Still Cloudy, Raining
Condition: Stable
I heard something last night around 01:00 right outside the door. It was the sound of something crying. I stayed up all night ready to protect the lives of Marian and April. I was convinced that it was one of them, but it never came any nearer to the shelter. If I had known then what it was now I would have just gone back to sleep. For when I went to check on it in the morning I nearly walked right into the rain.
What I heard last night was the sound of the wind blowing in the death clouds, those swirling grayish brown clouds that rained death down on us. I just barely stopped myself in time. One more inch and I would have been … It’s too terrible to even write about.
The rain has come early this year, which can’t be a good sign. Usually it waits till the end of March or the beginning of April to rain. But this is the earliest I have seen it in the past 5 years.
I bolted the door so that Marian wouldn’t go out. She isn’t yet strong enough to move the bolt alone. I think I will lay down and rest for a while. At least till Marian jumps on me begging for a pony ride.

Day: Same
Time: 15:02
Weather: Still Cloudy, Raining
Condition: Chaotic
We had a bit of a scare. I was woken suddenly by the sound of screaming. It turns out that Marian had opened the bolt and her mother couldn’t find her. We went as far out the door as we could without being hit by the rain and called her name. We heard no reply.
April began yelling at me. “You’re so irresponsible! Sleeping when you should be watching Marian! And how dare you leave the bolt unlocked! What kind of adult are you?!” It went on like that for approximately 15 minutes. It would have gone on longer if Marian hadn’t have showed up.
She just walked right out of the kitchen. What kind of mother doesn’t look for her daughter in the house? What kind of mother jumps straight to the conclusion that their daughter walked out into dangerous rain?
When we asked Marian if she opened the door she said “Yes, because the sad man outside asked me to”.
April and I glanced at each other then asked, “Did the man come inside Marian-darling?”
She shook her head and pointed to the eastern window. “He was standing there and looked sad. He said he was hungry, so I went to get him snacks. But when I came back he was gone.”
April relaxed a little; she thought that the danger was over. But I couldn’t relax. On Marian’s arm there was something wet. It could just be that she had to wash something and didn’t dry off enough, or the rain might have touched her.
When I tried to point this out to April she just plugged her ears and walked the other way. She can be so juvenile sometimes. I guess she is still mad at me about being asleep. But I’m not the only adult around here … although sometimes it feels like it.

Day: March 13
Time: 08:18
Weather: Still Cloudy
Condition: Stable
The rain stopped at 01:15 last night, which means that we can go and forage. But it still looks as though it is going to rain, so we can’t go too far out. If we get caught in the rain, I don’t think we have enough serum to cure all of us. I suggested that one of us stays behind while the other goes out foraging. April jumped at the chance to stay home. So I told her I would write the procedure down of how to inject the antidote in my journal should she need it. So here it is:
Hansen’s Influbacterial Malignant Injection:
Put on protective gear
Tie the patient down
Wrap a piece of cloth around a stick
Insert stick into their mouth
Wash the patient with Milk Acid
To prevent from re-infection cover wounds on skin with Plaster
Using five inch needle, inject the Hansen’s Influbacterial Malignant Serum into spinal cord
Patient will begin screaming
Leave patient tied down for 3 days
I hope that April can do this. She will only have one shot at this if I get caught in the rain. April, if something happens to me please tell Marian that I went to a happy place to find help. Don’t tell her the awful truth. Also, I have been sneaking her candy behind your back. It is in wooden chest that I keep by my bed. There is also something in there for you. I hope all goes well.

Day: March 14
Time: 05:30
Weather: Still Cloudy, Raining
Condition: Stable
Things went fine yesterday. I found a cart that had a bird’s nest underneath. I took the eggs and we had them for dinner last night. The rain came after I had come in for the evening. It was Lady Luck smiling down upon me. Of course I mean that figuratively. Me being a Chemist I don’t believe in luck and chance, everything has a purpose and a reason for being.
